Every second year we come together for a weekend of singing at Luther Heights camp where we have a chance to get to know one another better - and let our hair down! Photos: Tina Stubbs We have an amazing bunch of people who not only love to share their joy of singing with the community, but are also passionate about raising funds for a range of activities both locally and further afield. Since 2011 choir members have helped raise $66,677 - what an incredible achievement. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support!
More than 100 people packed the Uniting Church Hall to hear our members spread their love of singing and helped raise $3197 for Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels. The morning entertainment featured foot-stomping highlights from our repertoire of African, world and gospel music, with guest appearances by Girls with Pearls, Patsy Cline Sisters, Dean Martin (aka Geoff Hawes) singing Amore and veteran member Don Hardgrave with his humorous rendition of Side by Side. Guests then enjoyed a wonderful feast for morning tea, prepared by choir members. “Our members have the biggest hearts. They not only spread joy through song but volunteer their time outside of choir to a wide range of local community groups, including Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels,” choir director Yvonne said. Cool Harmonies also farewelled long-term supporter and ‘friend of the choir’ Judy Blackall from Marcoola Community Bank Branch, who has been promoted to Regional Manager in Cairns. “We thank Judy for her support over the last seven years and the bank’s sponsorship which has allowed Cool Harmonies to undertake a range of projects, including a CD, calendar and cookbook, with proceeds from sales being donated back to community groups,” Yvonne said. Six of our choir members joined the African Children’s Choir and Australian independent singer Kate Miller-Heidke on stage as part of a 1000-strong massed choir concert in Wollongong, NSW on 17 May.
Believed to be the largest ever massed choir concert in Australia, the Wollongong concert attracted 26 school and community choirs, plus individual singers from across the country. Our choir director Yvonne Corstorphin was also one of the musical directors for the massed choir, together with Dr Jonathon Welch AM (Choir of Hard Knocks), Lyn Williams OAM (Sydney Children’s Choir), Rachel Hore OAM from Canberra and Janet Swain from Mullumbimby, NSW. Yvonne sang in the massed choir performances with Cool Harmonies members Suzie, Libby, Tina, Sharron, Hari, and Sheila from Global Harmonies community choir.
