"I’m the lucky one who gets to look after this amazing bunch of Cool Harmonians each week, and it’s the most wonderfully rewarding, community-building endeavour I have ever encountered. These group of singers are an absolute pleasure to teach as they are enthusiastic, passionate, dedicated, fun and totally supportive of one another. We experience so much joy and laughter when we sing, and have built a very special connection through the many adventures we’ve shared. Being a part of this group not only gives us all a weekly uplifting injection of ‘whoosh’ but offers the same to those who we regularly share our harmonies and our voices with." |
From the moment she picked up her hair brush and belted out a powerful rendition of ‘Shout’ into the bathroom mirror, Yvonne Corstorphin knew that singing was in her blood. But it wasn’t until she completed Brian Martin’s Facilitator Training Course that she realised teaching others to create harmony was her absolute passion and life ambition.
Yvonne is the facilitator of the Cool Harmonies community choir, and for the last two years has also co-facilitated Brian Martin’s New World Rhythm choir. She is forever inspired by the pure joy ordinary people experience when they discover that their one voice, when combined with others, can create the most magical sound. ‘There is such a sense of belonging and strength in a singing group, it really does transform the metaphor harmony into a real life experience,’ she said. Yvonne is passionate about creating multiple spaces for community singing on the Sunshine Coast, organising Vocal Nosh events for the public to gather together in song, and Peer Sing workshops for choir members across the coast to share and explore their harmonies. She facilitates regular singing workshops for women in domestic violence centres and conducts workshops with students at Coolum State High School. Yvonne has performed at various events from the Woodford Folk Festival to the Hyatt Regency backing John Stevens. She has also co-facilitated Joy of Singing workshops at Camp Creative. For the past three years Yvonne has participated in singing tours of Japan; last year she co-facilitated both the Japanese and Australian choirs with the organiser Brian Martin. One of the highlights of her career to date has been conducting The Idea Of North at The J in Noosa. Yvonne has been a fundamental member of a wide variety of musical groups and choirs, from Vox 16, New World Rhythm, 20 Acre Voices, Out of Our Trio and Frock Rock. Yvonne has such a desire to spread harmony throughout the world she will be on a lifelong mission to bring people together so they can achieve that. |
